Songs For Independence Day

By Kim Ruehl, About.com

American folk songs aren't all about protesting something; there are also plenty of great tunes that pay homage to America. Included on this list are particularly songs that make reference to American Independence Day. Some of them seem to only refer to the 4th of July in passing, but the themes the songs depict embrace the spirit of American patriotism just as much.

1. "On the 4th of July" by James Taylor

James Taylor - October Road CD© Sony
This is a beautifully written tune by James Taylor, wherein he tells the story about falling in love on the 4th of July. It depicts all the awkward feelings of intimacy while also referring to the important values of love and surrender.

2. "America the Beautiful" by Neil Young

Neil Young - Living With War CD© Reprise Records
To punctuate his Living With War CD, Neil Young decided to sing "America the Beautiful." Perhaps as a way of reiterating that protest music isn't anti-American, or perhaps just to remind himself and the rest of us that America can be beautiful and wonderful, despite all the things we may find upsetting about current events. On this version, Young is joined by a hundred-voice choir at the end of what some participants referred to as a "twelve-hour peace rally."

3. "Song of the Patriot" by Johnny Cash

This tune by Johnny Cash is one of the flag-wavingest songs Cash ever sang. It makes no mistake, and wastes no time in saying, "I'm a flag waving, patriotic nephew of my Uncle Sam."

4. "American Tune" by Paul Simon

Paul Simon - Essential Paul Simon CDcourtesy Pricegrabber
This song starts out lamenting about traveling far from home, and ends with a commentary about America. Paul Simon's luscious poetics tell the story of his travels, while also commenting on American progress and prosperity, in contrast to feelings of loneliness and ineptness.

5. "Independence Day" by Ani DiFranco

Ani DiFranco's "Independence Day" tune (from Little Plastic Castle) isn't necessarily focused on her patriotism for America, but instead uses the opportunity to comment on the places where politics, patriotism, and personal relationships tend to overlap.

6. "Roses on the Fourth of July" by Nanci Griffith

Nanci Grifith - Ruby's Torch CDcourtesy Pricegrabber
With heart-breaking lines, "Love is roses every fourth of July," Nanci Griffith tells the story of a seemingly broken marriage that is also a very standard, every-day American love story. This is a lovely sad song about one woman's loneliness.

7. "Born on the Fourth of July" by Tom Paxton

Tom Paxton - Best of the Vanguard Years CDcourtesy Pricegrabber
This tune about a soldier who's become disenchanted with the systems of war, though he started out true blue and committed to the cause in Viet Nam. Tom Paxton's lyrics are hard-hitting and honest, pulling no punches in describing the man's journey from a child who looked at soldiers as heroes, to the veteran now married to his wheelchair.

8. "Yankee Doodle" by The Carter Family

Carter Family - Live on Border Radio, Vol. 2 CDcourtesy Pricegrabber
This classic old country-folk song (not the traditional "Yankee Doodle") by the Carter Family sings hopefully about the prospect of a real leader bringing peace to America. As they sing "He ain't no politician / He ain't no high-fallutin' / He's the everyday person like you / Believin' in the truth..." it becomes clear how timeless this song is.

9. "Oh Freedom" by Pete Seeger

Pete Seeger - We Shall Overcome: Complete Carnegie Hall CD© Columbia Records
This classic traditional folk song has been sung by just about everyone, with lyrics talking about the price of freedom and the importance of persistance in achieving it. It's always good to be reminded of the importance of personal liberty, and "Oh Freedom" as sung by Pete Seeger does just that.
