The buzz at Folk Alliance 2008 around Emily Elbert was that she looked like she was 12 years old, and then she sang these beautiful songs that bring to mind Norah Jones, among others.

In fact, there is a subtle quality to her songs that sounds a little like Norah Jones, but there's also a little Catie Curtis quality.

Pros
  • "Stars"
  • "River"
  • "I Feel Fine"
Cons
  • Sometimes the lyrics are naive, but that will change as time goes for this gifted artist

Description

  • A nice introduction to this new, young artist
  • A collection of feel-good songs
  • Sweet, introspective tunes laden with natural imagery

Guide Review - Emily Elbert - 'Bright Side'

"Garden of the Sun" (Purchase/Download) is a lovely, simple tune with close melodies throughout, and natural imagery calling for love and light. "River" is another pretty song driven by natural imagery. The only downside to this and other songs on the disc is that it lies so far below Elbert's solid vocal range. She can hit the notes, but they're just not as strong.

Elbert has good energy, her songs are well-intentioned, with great messages and a lot of raw talent to back them up. Some of the lyrics are a little naive, but that's something that will only improve over the course of what will, hopefully, be a nice long career for her. Some of the tunes employ a bit of old school funk, while others are quiet, introspective, songs about nature. In all, though, "Bright Side" is a nice introductory collection of feel-good songs.
