2006 was my first time at the Wintergrass festival, which takes place just an hour away from where I live. Tacoma, Washington, wouldn't seem like a haven of bluegrass at first glance, but the Pacific Northwest, it turns out, is absolutely teeming with traditional music. Bluegrass is no exception.

This year's Wintergrass festival introduced me to artists about whom I knew nothing (The Wilders, Prairie Flyer, Reedy Buzzards, Mountain Heart). It also gave me an opportunity to see some truly revolutionary, inimitable players and groups like Laurie Lewis, Del McCoury and relative newcomers/show-stoppers Uncle Earl.

It was Kansas City's the Wilders, however, that stole the whole weekend for me. If, now that the year is through, you haven't had a chance to catch the Wilders in action, consider making it a goal for 2007.
